For consumer brands and home builders
In development. This service for consumer brands and home builders is being built now. This page describes what it will cover.
Owners of appliances, vehicles, home systems and new homes post long, specific accounts of what failed and what they like: model numbers, build dates, months in service, repair costs and who paid. Warranty, quality and customer-care teams rarely see that in one place.
The report is meant to help you see which products, plans and warranty stages draw repeated owner reports before claims volume shows it, and whether a change to a product or a warranty process is reflected in what owners post afterwards.
Sources
- Owner forums: owner clubs, enthusiast and repair forums, and manufacturer communities, each read under a recorded basis.
- Public comments on repair videos, where the platform’s terms and official interface allow.
- Government safety databases: CPSC SaferProducts.gov incident reports and recalls, and NHTSA vehicle complaints and recalls, through their official open-data interfaces.
- Excluded: review sites, retailer reviews and private groups. Reddit is read only under license, and we do not hold one today.
Coverage. Because private groups are not read and Reddit is read only under license, coverage depends on public owner forums, public video comments and government databases. If coverage for your products is thin, we tell you before you buy.
What the report will cover
- Complaints, merged into issues with IDs that stay the same from week to week, each tagged with the component, model or plan, build date where stated, months in service, repair cost and who paid.
- Praise, grouped by what owners like and shown beside the issues.
- Time-to-failure view: for each component, how many months in service owners reported at failure. These are counts of public discussion, not reliability rates.
- Hazard reports routed to human review. Posts describing fire, smoke, electrical shock, gas leaks, water damage, carbon monoxide or injury will be held for human review before they appear in the report’s safety section, with the reviewer’s decision recorded. They will be listed beside government incident or recall records that appear to concern the same product. Reports do not determine whether a hazard exists or whether any reporting obligation applies. Thread Witness files nothing on your behalf.
Home builders
For builders, reports will roll up by region, community, home plan and metro, and follow the warranty stages owners describe: the 30-day walkthrough, the 1-year walkthrough, the 2-year systems warranty and the 10-year structural warranty. Individual contractors, installers and dealers are never named.
Example (fictional builder, invented data). Larkspur Homes is an invented name used only to show the layout. It does not refer to any real builder.
| Community | Home plan | Warranty stage | Component | Owners describing it | Median months in service | Owners praising |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Community A | Plan 2140 | 1-year walkthrough | Sliding patio door sticks | 6 | 11 | 0 |
| Community B | Plan 1860 | 1-year walkthrough | Sliding patio door sticks | 8 | 12 | 0 |
| Community A | All plans | 30-day walkthrough | Warranty team closed the list quickly | 0 | 1 | 9 |
Language
Reports use “owners describe” and “community reports indicate”. They do not call anything a defect or faulty construction, and they make no finding about safety; they count and cite what owners said in public.
